I have to admit, as much as I am sad that summer is over, I am excited to bring out the cute and cozy fall fashion. While autumn is beautiful, the weather can be very unpredictable. A warm sunny day soon turns into a cold night. It can feel like summer one day and winter the very next day. A mixture of knitwear, outwear, loungewear, and versatile essential items are needed to keep up with the fickle weather.
As we continue to struggle with the pandemic, fashion trends have shifted. This fall season it’s all about comfortability as we are still spending a lot of time indoors. This year, (like summer) my fall collection addressed my new reality. While the kids are remote learning this year, its only fitting that my fall wardrobe screams comfort, style, and practicality.
As you transition from summer to autumn, you don’t have to put away all your wardrobe just yet. You can hang on your warm-weather items just a little bit longer. Adding a layer and a pair of boots can transform your favorite summer dress to a fall look. From the various shades of grays, deep bright cherry red, to the gorgeous pops of orange, its a must to add these hues to your collection! Autumn is the perfect season to play with a plethora of colors, textures, and patterns.
Here is a list of my fall essential that will keep you stylish all season long:
Scarf
Adding a scarf for the extra layer of warmth when the temperature dips is a must! Whether it’s made from wool, cotton, or even cashmere, a scarf the perfect accessory that effortlessly elevates your outfit. I own several scarfs and wear them anytime I leave the house during the cold season. With the holiday season right around the corner, scarves are the perfect gift for your family, friends, or coworker! My favorite scarf is a reversible wool scarf that was gifted me at a holiday party several years ago.
Cowl Neck Oversized Sweater
One of my favorite pieces of fall clothing is an oversized sweater. They are not only cozy but the cowl neck helps to keep the cold out. Oversized sweaters are basically fashionable wearable blankets that are perfect for cold day. When I first moved to Massachusetts from Florida, I owed one, just ONE sweater. Now my closets my filled with a variety of sweaters.
Everyday Cardigan
When a sweater is too warm for a cool day, the cardigan is an easy “throw on and go” piece that can keep you comfortable without feeling overheated. It is a closet staple because it easily transitions from season to season. My favorites are oversized cardigans, which effortlessly layer over almost anything! It also allows me to experiment with textures, patterns, and colors.
Denim Jeans
How can you go wrong with a pair (or several pairs) of denim jeans? They have become a permanent staple in our lives. Whether it is worn on Casual Friday at work or a night out with friends, denim jeans are both stylish and versatile. If you are in the market for a new pair, here are some of my favorites:
Leggings (including faux leather)
Over the years, leggings have become a fashion trend. They come in many styles, colors, sizes, and usage options. They can be combines with a range of top lengths and shapes, as well as shoes or boots to take your look through the seasons. As a mom of five who literally runs around every day, I have a large collection of leggings, from carpi styles to activewear and even a couple of faux leather. There’s one to match almost every top in my wardrobe.
Wide Brim Hat
Autumn is the perfect opportunity to accessorize like a pro and nothing makes a statement like a wide-brim hat. It can complement almost every fall outfit and easily worn all day long. When I am having a bad hair day, I like to throw one on before leaving the house. I recommend one that is lined with satin to reduce friction which hair damage. Shop the wide-brim hats that I have picked to add to your fall collection.
Puffed- Sleeved Sweater
If you want to add a little bit of oomph to your fall look this year, then the puff-sleeved sweater is the way to go! I have to say, I wasn’t a big fan at first- with my broad shoulders, busty chest, and long arms- I preferred cardigans. At a whim, I went out and purchased one and immediately regretted not buying them any sooner. Add some dramatic flair to your autumn collection with some of my sweater picks:
Sweater Dress
Whether it’s Thanksgiving dinner or lunch date, a sweater dress is perfect for many different occasions. Style it with a belt and a pair of knee-high boots to upgrade your look. I like to keep it simple yet chic by adding a chandelier earring and a tote bag. Like many autumn pieces in my closet, it can easily transition into another season.
Ankle Boots
Who doesn’t love a new pair of shoes? A good pair of shoes will transform your entire outfit. Summer is all about showing off those perfectly manicured toes. Autumn is about comfort and warmth with style. Thanks to their versatility, ankle boots are essential in the fall and a great pair will get you through chilly days and unpredictable weather.
Joggers
Continuing with the theme of comfort, joggers are a must for the fall. Like most of the country, I’ve spent most of the year indoors. My online shopping cart consisted of loungewear, joggers, and more joggers! So it’s no surprise that they will be my go-to comfort look for the fall. You can dress them up with a blazer and heels or throw on a pair of sneakers for a sporty look. Now that the kids are remote learning for the school year, I purchased several joggers for the entire family.
Flats
Whether it’s for work or a hot date, it’s often difficult to find shoes that are comfortable, stylish, and versatile. While I love a nice pair of heels, there are some days when wearing heels isn’t an option for me. Flats are the perfect choice for everyday chic and comfortable shoes. Not only are they fashionable but they pair well with just about anything. From ballet slippers to loafers, below are my favorite flats that can transition you into the fall season.
Knit Sweater
What is autumn without a knit sweater? They are perfect for keeping you warm in the fall and winter season. From bold color patterns to trendy leopard prints, it’s no surprise that knit sweaters are still the hottest fall trends. The key to styling a knit sweater, whether oversized or tailored is nailing the silhouette. Simply style with your favorite pair of jeans (or leggings) and boots for a perfect fall ensemble. You don’t want to drown yourself in fabric, instead, opt for a more relaxed fit. If you are looking for knit sweaters, I have a great roundup you are sure to fall in love with.
Tote Bag
Gone are the days that tote bags were used for your grocery shopping. Designer tote bags are not only fashionable but also functional, perfect for the on-the-run mom. From chic quilted tote to versatile canvas tote, there’s one that fits every mood. While the mini totes have been a runner up this year, my first prize still goes to the oversized tote bag. Strictly speaking from a parent perspective, I am more about versatility and function than style. Tote bags offer plenty of room for all of my everyday essentials, including the random things my kids like to throw in there!
Outerwear
Although I spend more time indoors during the cold season, a fall coat is a must when I leave the house. But because of the unpredictable weather, picking out an outfit is always a struggle. The secret is to wear layers, so you can take things off or put things on when needed. Jackets/coats easily pair well with anything in your closet; throw one over your favorite jeans and a lightweight sweater on a cool day or over a turtleneck on a cold winter night. From chic trench coats, puffers, to edgy leather jackets, there’s a style for every occasion. Below are some versatile coats and jackets that will complement your fall assemble.
All Occasion Dress
Move over Sweater, and make room for that bold fall dress. When worn correctly, a dress is a wardrobe staple that should carry you through several seasons. When choosing a dress, go for prints and patterns, a belted waist, or floral wraps to help elevate your look. Depending on the occasion, play around with some accessories and shoes. Cocktail party, fall wedding, or even a holiday party on your calendar? I have rounded up some options that are guaranteed to make a statement.
